The earth's surface is an essential factor controlling landscape processes and an important indicator of the distribution of geo factors forming landscape. Therefore the terrain analysis is often basic data to other products, like "Soil", "Climate" and "Water".

Since many years scilands GmbH is experienced in terrain analysis. We developed extraordinary software (compare: "Methods") to be able to offer you several products concerning the "terrain" which you will find nowhere else.

The entire terrain analysis is based on the Digital Terrain Models (DTM) (compare: "Basic Data" and "Definitions DTM, etc.") which we valorised with high quality methods.

Our product range "terrain" divides into the following subjects areas:

Morphographic terrain classification

• Geomorpholgraphic maps (GMK)
  Morphographic terrain units (see below) combined with morphometric terrain factors (see below) to a terrain analysis being relevant to landscape ecology
• Morphographic terrain factors
  Classifying the terrain in morphographic shapes (terrain units), for example: buttom and summit areas, relative flattenings and steepenings in slopes, convergent and divergent areas, as well as aligned factors, like channel and crest lines

Morphometric Terrain Factors

• Local morphometric terrain factors
  Terrain factors being calculated out of the neighbourhood of one grid cell (altitude value), such as slope gradient and aspect
  
• Complex morphometric terrain factors
  Terrain factors being calculated within the context of large areas (for example: catchment areas, altitude above channel line)
